The Gambling Commission, recognized as a leading authority under Canada's gambling regulations, has announced it will soon release four consultations as part of its ongoing Gambling Act Review. This complements the White Paper review released earlier this year.
The proposed policies
Following a series of discussions that took place since the initial White Paper was issued last April, it has been confirmed that the upcoming four proposals include Age Verification, Online Game Design, Enhanced Cross-Selling, and Direct Marketing , while also thoroughly addressing the financial vulnerabilities faced by online casinos.
Particularly, the focus on financial risks has become a topic of interest in recent months. These risks pose several challenges and debates for both casino operators and players. The newly proposed framework will implement a two-tier verification system for users that casino operators must comply with to manage risks effectively, which include affordability assessments.
These affordability assessments are seen as contentious and may restrict access for various players with differing financial capabilities. Additionally, players would be obligated to provide private information to the casino, such as their bank statements.
This information will be confirmed upon the official release of the aforementioned four proposals later this week.
The consultation process
Tim Miller, the Executive Director of the Gambling Commission, oversees the consultation procedure. He mentioned that the process of drafting and consultations is anticipated to conclude by mid-October of this year .
The Commission has also indicated that, alongside the four proposals, it will introduce two other initiatives aimed at refining regulations concerning personal management licenses and enhancing procedures for regulatory bodies.
