Research suggests that behaviors related to gambling start early in life, and the NCPG ( National Council on Problem Gambling ) has highlighted findings that youth who encounter any form of gambling at an early age are significantly more likely to participate in hazardous gambling activities later on.
Why does this raise concerns? In Canada and North America, the lottery ranks among the most favored gambling options, resulting in children being significantly exposed to its availability.
The Gift Responsibly Campaign
This prompted the launch of the Gift Responsibly Campaign in late 2023 to tackle this concern. The initiative includes a coalition of 66 lottery operators and 84 community organizations around the world, comprising all authorized and reliable lottery providers in both the United States and Canada.
Additionally, the initiative is acknowledged by the World Lottery Association and the North American Association of State and Provincial Lotteries .
Especially for the Holiday season
The campaign commenced and will carry on throughout November and December, featuring a robust series of efforts aimed at tackling the issue, such as training retail locations, educating communities about the disadvantages of gifting lottery tickets, and executing social media campaigns.
“It’s essential for adults to comprehend that lottery tickets should never be gifted to children or minors,” stated Keith Whyte, the executive director of the NCPG, during the press conference to introduce the Gift Responsibly Campaign.
